  5. This README document MUST accompany the "Enabler Patch" file.  These files are for public distribution at no charge.  Please contact Connectix Corporation before including in a commercial package.

Connectix recently discovered a system bug which was verified and repaired at Apple Computer, Inc., involving machines which use system enabler files.  Since the repair will not be available for an undetermined amount of time, Connectix has produced this patch to distribute a fix to users currently experiencing problems.

  12. Questions you may have regarding "Enabler Patch":

  14. Q:  I'm not sure if I need the patch or not.  Should I install the "Enabler Patch"?
  15. A:  If your machine does not have the exact code which produces the bug, "Enabler Patch" will do nothing.

  17. Q:  Can "Enabler Patch" damage my system?
  18. A:  No.  It does not modify any files on your drive.  The engineers at Apple verified that "Enabler Patch" will produce the desired results with no side effects.

  20. Q:  If I don't run other Connectix software, should I install the "Enabler Patch"?
  21. A:  Even if you do not run our software, it may be a good idea to throw it in.  The bug is in the system software and may affect software from other vendors.

  23. Q:  What does the bug do?
  24. A:  If you are running system 7.1 and your machine requires a system enabler file, software making the system call "GetIndResource" with an index out of bounds will cause two low memory globals to be set incorrectly.  This potentially can cause a crash of your system at some later point when some software is run and could modify the enabler file.

  26. Q:  When can I remove the patch?
  27. A:  The bug is supposed to be fixed in the next release of the System software.  That would be anything later than System 7 release 7.1.  Once the bug is not present, the patch will not load.

  33. The current known machines which use enabler files are:
  34.         PowerBooks:  Duo 210/230, 180, 160
  35.         Desktop: IIvx, IIvi
  36.  
  37. Software known to produce the bug:
  38.         7.1 (currently) and any system enabler file
  39.         any one of AppleTalk 58 or Suitcase 2.1 (probably more - these are the only ones so far)

  43. INSTALLATION:

  45. Drop the file "Enabler Patch" onto your System 7.1 system folder.  It belongs in the extensions folder.  No icon will show at startup.
